The Subglacial Antarctic Lakes Scientific Access (SALSA) Project accessed Mercer Subglacial Lake using environmentally clean hot-water drilling to examine interactions among ice, water, sediment, rock, microbes and carbon reservoirs within the lake water column and underlying sediments. A ~0.4 m diameter borehole was melted through 1087 m of ice and maintained over ~10 days, allowing observation of ice properties and collection of water and sediment with various tools. Over this period, SALSA collected: 60 L of lake water and 10 L of deep borehole water; microbes >0.2 μm in diameter from in situ filtration of ~100 L of lake water; 10 multicores 0.32–0.49 m long; 1.0 and 1.76 m long gravity cores; three conductivity–temperature–depth profiles of borehole and lake water; five discrete depth current meter measurements in the lake and images of ice, the lake water–ice interface and lake sediments. Temperature and conductivity data showed the hydrodynamic character of water mixing between the borehole and lake after entry. Models simulating melting of the ~6 m thick basal accreted ice layer imply that debris fall-out through the ~15 m water column to the lake sediments from borehole melting had little effect on the stratigraphy of surficial sediment cores.

Summary
Abstract
In this paper, I’ll begin by tracing the historical context for world building as enactment of fandom, primarily by constructing an arc between the golden age of cinephilia and the current state of transmediaphilia. How do both of these taste ideologies depend on the acquisition of a certain kind of media literacy, subcultural affiliation, and modes of both accessing and reconfiguring popular archives made up of the accumulation of textual universes formerly considered to be disposable entertainment? Once I’ve established the most productive points of contact, I’ll focus on the impact of portable digital devices as breeder-reactors of world building due the inherently transmediated nature of the devices themselves and the play-listing mentality of the popular archivists who use them.

Within the past decade, narratives universes as different as Marvel superheroes and Jane Austen have become worlds that you do something with, functioning not just as especially satisfying fictional realms that offer a unique set of delights but as instigations for further expansion and extension. One could argue this was anticipated by the intertextuality that was such a prominent feature of the postmodern narratives of the 1980s that made it so abundantly clear that the edges of textual universes were far more permeable than previously imagined and escaping those strictures generated a new kind of entertainment value. While the generic hybridity of films such as Blade Runner, Blue Velvet, and Near Dark may have been fueled by an exuberant determination to appropriate and extend narrative universes, it was conducted by pedigreed creative artists like Ridley Scott, David Lynch, and Kathryn Bigelow. There was Blade Runner but no BladeRunnerland that was extended in carefully coordinated and equally robust uncoordinated ways. The appropriation franchise, as it were has been extended to conglomerates, as well as amateur fans, and a whole spectrum of world builders in between. Just as the extravagant intertextuality of postmodern narratives of the 1980s signaled a new phase in the history of popular storytelling that seemed to call out for media theory that could account for that expanded narrativity, the frenetic narrative world building of contemporary popular culture needs to be accounted for by new forms of media theory that might get a handle on the interplay between textuality and digital technology, and between curatorship and subjectivity.
Economic Assessment of Weed Management Systems in Glufosinate-Resistant, Glyphosate-Resistant, Imidazolinone-Tolerant, and Nontransgenic Corn

Four field studies were conducted in 2004 to evaluate corn tolerance, weed control, grain yield, and net returns in glufosinate-resistant (GUR), glyphosate-resistant (GYR), imidazolinone-tolerant (IT), and nontransgenic (NT) corn with various herbicide systems. No significant differences between hybrid systems were observed for weed control. Limited corn injury (< 5%) was observed for all herbicide treatments. A single early POST (EPOST) system without S-metolachlor and sequential POST over the top (POT) herbicide systems, averaged over corn hybrids and PRE and late POST-directed (LAYBY) herbicide options, provide 93 and 99% control of goosegrass, respectively, and at least 83 and 97% control of Texas panicum, respectively. A single EPOST system without S-metolachlor, averaged over corn hybrids and LAYBY treatment options, provided at least 88% control of large crabgrass. When averaged over corn hybrid and PRE herbicide options, a sequential POT herbicide system alone provided at least 98, 99, 98, and 100 control of large crabgrass, morningglory species, Palmer amaranth, and common lambsquarters, respectively. The addition of ametryn at LAYBY to a single EPOST system without S-metolachlor was beneficial for improving control of morningglory species, common lambsquarters, and Palmer amaranth, depending on location. However, the observed increases (7 percentage points or less) are likely of limited biological significance. Grain yield was variable between hybrids and locations because of environmental differences. Consequently, net returns for each hybrid system within a location were also variable. Any POT system with or without ametryn at LAYBY, averaged over corn hybrid and PRE herbicide options, provided at least 101, 97, 92, and 92% yield protection at Clayton, Kinston, Lewiston, and Rocky Mount, NC, respectively. Net returns were maximized with treatments that provided excellent weed control with minimal inputs.
Weed Control and Yield with Glufosinate-Resistant Cotton Weed Management Systems

Field studies were conducted near Clayton, Goldsboro, Kinston, and Rocky Mount, NC in 2003 to evaluate weed control and cotton response to postemergence (POST) treatments of glufosinate applied alone or in tank mixtures with s-metolachlor, pyrithiobac, or trifloxysulfuron. Late-season control of common lambsquarters, common ragweed, entireleaf morningglory, ivyleaf morningglory, jimsonweed, pitted morningglory, purple nutsedge, and sicklepod with glufosinate early postemergence (EPOST) was ≥90%. The addition of S-metolachlor to glufosinate EPOST improved control of all weeds except sicklepod, ivyleaf morningglory, and entireleaf morningglory. When applied POST, glufosinate provided ≥90% late season control of common lambsquarters, common ragweed, entireleaf morningglory, ivyleaf morningglory, jimsonweed, large crabgrass, pitted morningglory, purple nutsedge, and sicklepod. Control of goosegrass and Palmer amaranth was 81 and 84%, respectively. When pyrithiobac or trifloxysulfuron were added in POST tank mixtures, control of Palmer amaranth improved 6 and 9 percentage points, respectively. Control of goosegrass remained near 80% regardless of herbicide treatment used. The addition of a late post-directed (LAYBY) tank-mixture of glufosinate plus prometryn provided ≥88% late season control of all weeds. Reduced control of goosegrass and Palmer amaranth was observed with the LAYBY tank mixture of glufosinate plus MSMA when compared to other LAYBY tank mixtures. Cotton lint yields in plots receiving any herbicide application were significantly higher than plots receiving no herbicide application for all application timings. Cotton lint yields were ≥ 740 kg/ha where an EPOST was applied and ≥ 680 kg/ha when a POST herbicide was applied. Cotton lint yields were at least 200 kg/ha greater on plots receiving a LAYBY application when compared to plots where no LAYBY treatment was applied.
A Comparison of Weed Control in Herbicide-Resistant, Herbicide-Tolerant, and Conventional Corn

Experiments were conducted at three North Carolina research stations in 2003 to evaluate weed control and corn yield in glyphosate-resistant, glufosinate-resistant, imidazolinone-tolerant, and conventional corn weed management systems. Late-season control of common lambsquarters, large crabgrass, and yellow nutsedge increased with metolachlor PRE compared with no PRE herbicide treatment. Common lambsquarters, pitted morningglory, entireleaf morningglory, spurred anoda, and tropic croton control was improved by a single early POST (EPOST) application regardless of herbicide system. Control of common lambsquarters, pitted morningglory, entireleaf morningglory, and spurred anoda was similar for glyphosate and glufosinate systems for each POST over-the-top (POT) herbicide system. A single EPOST application of imazethapyr plus imazapyr to imidazolinone-tolerant corn controlled common lambsquarters, pitted morningglory, entireleaf morningglory, and spurred anoda and was better than a single EPOST application of glyphosate, glufosinate, or nicosulfuron. Tropic croton was controlled ≥ 95% with glufosinate or glyphosate, applied once or twice, or in mixture with metolachlor. A single EPOST application of imazethapyr plus imazapyr or nicosulfuron did not control tropic croton. Common lambsquarters, entireleaf morningglory, large crabgrass, Palmer amaranth, and yellow nutsedge control was greater with a late-POST–directed (LAYBY) of ametryn than no LAYBY. Systems that did not include a POT herbicide system had the lowest percentage in the weed-free yield and the lowest yield. Treatments that included a POT system with or without a PRE treatment of metolachlor yielded within 5% of the weed-free treatment, regardless of herbicide system.

Introduction
Approximately 1.2 million persons in Oakland County, Michigan (USA) reside less than 50 miles from the Fermi Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 2, but information is limited regarding how residents might react during a radiation emergency. Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) survey methodology has been used in disaster and nondisaster settings to collect reliable and accurate population-based public health information, but it has not been used to assess household-level emergency preparedness for a radiation emergency. To improve emergency preparedness plans in Oakland County, including how residents might respond during a radiation emergency, Oakland County Health Division (OCHD), with assistance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH), conducted a CASPER survey.
MethodsDuring September 2012, a 2-stage cluster sampling design was used to select 210 representative households in Oakland County. By using in-person surveys, the proportion of households with essential needs and supplies, how residents might respond to public health authorities’ instructions, and their main source for obtaining information during a radiation emergency were assessed. Data were weighted to account for the complex sampling design.
ResultsOf the goal of 210 households, 192 (91.4%) surveys were completed: 64.7% and 85.4% of respondents indicated having 3-day supplies of water and of nonperishable food, respectively; 62.8% had a 7-day supply of prescription medication for each person who needed it. Additionally, 64.2% had a working carbon monoxide detector; 67.1% had a first-aid kit; and 52% had an alternative heat source. In response to instructions from public health officials during a radiation emergency, 93.3% of all respondents would report to a radiation screening center; 96% would evacuate; and 91.8% would shelter-in-place. During a radiation emergency, 55.8% of respondents indicated their main information source would be television, 18.4% radio, and 13.6% the Internet. The most trusted source for information would be the local public health department (36.5%), local news (23%), a physician (11.2%), and family members (11.1%). Including completed and incomplete interviews, refusals, and nonrespondents, 517 total households were contacted.
ConclusionsCASPER data regarding how residents might react during a radiation emergency provided objective and quantifiable information that will be used to develop Oakland County's radiation emergency preparedness plans. Survey information demonstrates the feasibility and usefulness of CASPER methodology for radiation emergency preparedness planning.

WHAT ARE WE REALLY TALKING ABOUT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT THE STATE OF READING? AND WHAT DO WE HOPE TO LEARN FROM THE Answers to that question? Confirmation of deeply held prejudices, or a better understanding of what reading means in digital cultures? We need to pose those questions right up front because the debate about the state of reading has been precipitated by the increasing ubiquity of the e-book, even though reading culture has been undergoing massive infrastructural changes for over a decade in the United States. The public discourse on the state of reading and on whether it has a viable future has focused on the future of the book and of literary reading now that e-books have apparently changed everything. The state of reading, as such, is not at stake because it doesn't seem likely that firemen from Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 will be swinging by your place anytime soon to torch your books and replace them with a well-appointed wall screen, eliminating reading forever in favor of mindless viewing. People will keep reading, if only to take in the endless text that comes at them on their various screens, from the ones on the wall to the ones they carry around with them everywhere on their portable devices. Try looking at those screens without reading. No, it's clear from the assumptions that underpin the end-is-near pronouncements about the e-book that there's reading and then there's reading and that when people talk about the future of reading, they're worried about whether readers worthy of the name will continue reading literary fiction in the twenty-first century. But that isn't a very interesting question because it imagines the act of reading in such an ahistorical manner, curled up in a well-upholstered time warp, far from the unruliness of contemporary reading cultures.

In this chapter, a collection of “favorite trajectories” from various authors are presented.
While Lagrangian data analysis uses an extensive array of sophisticated tools, including classical statistics, dynamical system theory, stochastic modelling, assimilation techniques, and many others, visual inspection of individual trajectories still plays an important role, providing the first and often fundamental glimpse of the underlying dynamics. Often, for Lagrangian investigators, looking at trajectories gives the first intuition, then leading to the use of sophisticated and appropriate analysis. Trajectories tell the story of the journey of drifters and floats, and these stories are often complex and fascinating.
In the following sections, a number of investigators take us in the various world oceans, including Atlantic, Pacific and regional Seas, from the Poles to the Tropics, telling us the stories of their favorite trajectories and giving us their intuition and physical insights.
Mesoscale eddies in the Red Sea outflow region
In 2001–2002, 50 RAFOS floats were released at the core depth (∼ 650 m) of Red Sea Outflow Water (RSOW) in the Gulf of Aden (northwestern Indian Ocean) as part of the Red Sea Outflow Experiment (REDSOX). The objective was to determine how warm, saline RSOW spreads from its source at the southern end of Bab al Mandeb Strait to the open Indian Ocean. Our hypothesis was that either boundary undercurrents or submesoscale coherent vortices (SCVs like Meddies, but here called “Reddies”) were the main transport mechanisms for RSOW.
